Percentage Tricks: Calculate Discounts, Tips, and Changes in Your Head
Percentages appear everywhere — price tags, salary hikes, exam scores, news headlines — yet most people reach for a phone calculator for even simple cases. A handful of mental shortcuts covers the vast majority of everyday percentage problems.
The 10% Building Block
Ten percent of any number is that number with the decimal point moved one place left: 10% of 640 is 64. Nearly every common percentage can be assembled from this block. Need 30%? Triple the 10% value (192). Need 5%? Halve it (32). Need 15%? Add those together (96). Need 1%? Move the decimal two places (6.40).
This turns a 35% discount on a 2,400 jacket into fast mental steps: 10% is 240, so 30% is 720, 5% is 120, total discount 840, final price 1,560.
The Reversibility Trick
X% of Y always equals Y% of X. That means 8% of 50 — awkward — is the same as 50% of 8, which is instantly 4. Similarly 16% of 25 becomes 25% of 16 = 4. Whenever one side of the pair is a friendly number like 25, 50, or 20, flip the problem.
Percentage Change Done Right
Percentage change is (new − old) ÷ old × 100 — always divide by the original value. A price rising from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase, but falling from 100 to 80 is only a 20% decrease, because the base changed. This asymmetry is why a stock that drops 50% must then gain 100% just to break even.
Beware the difference between percentage points and percent: an interest rate moving from 4% to 6% rose by 2 percentage points but by 50 percent. Headlines regularly blur this distinction.
